BRITISH DUO WILL TEAM UP FOR 2021 ZURICH CLASSIC
PGA TOUR announces full schedule for 2020-21 Season
Zurich Classic of New Orleans to be played April 19-25, 2021
“Super Season” features 50 tournaments, the most in a season since 1975
The PGA TOUR today announced the complete schedule for the 2020-21 PGA TOUR Season, featuring 50 official FedEx Cup tournaments – including 14 tournaments that were postponed or canceled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic – culminating with the crowning of the FedEx Cup champion Labor Day weekend in 2021.
TPC Louisiana will once again be the host for the 2021 Zurich Classic of New Orleans as it returns to its traditional date in late April. Jon Rahm and teammate Ryan Palmer will return to defend their championship in New Orleans next spring. The Zurich Classic is the only Official Team Event on the PGA TOUR.
The schedule features the most tournaments in a season since 1975. Three events postponed in 2020 – U.S. Open, Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship and Masters Tournament – will be played in the fall portion of the 2020-21 season and again in their traditional dates during the 2021 calendar year, along with 11 tournaments that were canceled and not rescheduled as a result of the pandemic, including THE PLAYERS Championship. In addition, with the postponement of the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020, the men’s Olympic Golf competition will take place July 26-August 1, 2021, as a standalone event for the first time.

Since 1958, the Fore!Kids Foundation has raised money to fund children’s service organizations through golf events like the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Although the tournament was cancelled in the spring, the Fore!Kids Foundation still managed to donate over $1.5 million to local and regional children’s charities. Zurich Insurance, the Title Sponsor of the tournament, played a huge role in the ability to be able to fund the charities. As a 501(c)(3) corporation, Fore!Kids has helped to raise more than $40 million to date for children’s charities in metro New Orleans and Baton Rouge. More information at ww.forekidsfoundation.com.
Televised in more than 224 countries and territories, the Zurich Classic of New Orleans generates a significant economic impact on the city of New Orleans and the entire state of Louisiana. Independent research has shown that the tournament generates spending of more than $40 million within the local economy and garners $33 million in positive national and international media exposure for both the city and state throughout the year beyond the four days of competition.
World #3 player Jon Rahm pairs with Wesley Bryan for 2018 Zurich Classic of New Orleans
LSU’s Sam Burns, already a winner on the Web.com Tour, will team with veteran William McGirt
NEW ORLEANS, LA (April 3, 2018)—Jon Rahm, who rocketed to #3 in the world after his first full season on the PGA TOUR, has committed to play in his first Zurich Classic, announced Steve Worthy, CEO of the Fore!Kids Foundation, producer of the tournament.
Rahm will partner with Wesley Bryan, who also won a title in his first fulltime year on the TOUR.
In addition to the Rahm-Bryan team, Worthy also announced that Sam Burns, who just claimed his first Web.com contest this week, will team with PGA TOUR veteran William McGirt, who won the Memorial Tournament in 2016.
“Jon has quickly established himself as a fan favorite for his passion on the course and the quality of his game,” said Worthy. “We welcome him to his first Zurich Classic and welcome back Wesley to his second,” Worthy added.
Rahm won his first title last year at the 2017 Farmers Insurance Open and claimed another victory this season at the 2018 Career Builder Challenge to vault him to third in the world golf rankings.
In the last 18 months, he has recorded two wins on the PGA TOUR and two more on the European Tour, accelerating his rise in the world rankings from 45th to third. He recorded four top-10 finishes in the FedExCup playoff tournaments that concluded last season.
In his first full season on the TOUR, he recorded 11 top-10 finishes, behind only Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas. He also won the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award on the European Tour.
Competing for Arizona State, he became the first player to twice win the Ben Hogan Award, given to the best collegiate golfer. He also won the Jack Nicklaus Award, given to the top Division I collegiate golfer and played on the 2014 World Cup team and the 2015 Palmer Cup squad.
During his collegiate career, he recorded 11 victories, second only to former Sun Devil Phil Mickelson. He won the 2016 individual Pac-12 title and was a three-time All-American. He also won the 2015 Mark McCormack Medal and the 2014 World Amateur Championship, breaking a record held by Jack Nicklaus. Overseas in his native Spain, he won the Spanish Amateur Championship back-to-back in 2014-15.
Bryan started his first full season on TOUR fast as well, winning the RBC Heritage the week before he made his debut at the Zurich Classic last season, when he finished tied for 29th teaming with Ryan Blaum.
In the weeks leading up to his first victory last year, he claimed two fourths and a tie for seventh in the space of a month.
He comes from a golfing family. His older brother George IV was a three-time All-American at the University of South Carolina and his sister played for the College of Charleston. His father, George, played in the 1999 PGA Championship and now runs the George Bryan Golf Academy.
While on the Web.com Tour, Bryan won three titles, including the 2016 Chitimacha Louisiana Open presented by NACHER.
Burns, who starred at LSU, took an eighth at the Honda Classic this year, his fourth start on the PGA TOUR. Earlier, in his third start as a professional, he finished second at the Web.com Club Colombia Championship behind Ben Taylor, who also played for LSU.
The Shreveport native broke through this week by winning the Savannah Golf Championship after birdies on the last three holes and now ranks fourth on the Web.com money list. The top 25 players on the money list at the end of the season earn their cards on the PGA TOUR for the next season. Burns has made the cut in five of his six PGA TOUR starts this season.
McGirt is a TOUR veteran with 212 starts in his career going back to 2011. His best finishes this season have been a tie for eighth in the RSM Classic and a tie for 10th in the Shriners Hospital for Children Open.
He has made the FedExCup playoffs for the last seven seasons.
The Zurich Classic is the only team tournament on the PGA TOUR season. This year’s 72-hole stroke team play format will feature Four-Ball (best ball) during the first and third rounds and Foursomes (alternate shot) during the second and fourth rounds. The starting field will consist of 80 teams. Following the conclusion of the second round, the field will be cut to the low 35 teams and ties. In case of a tie after 72 holes, there will be a sudden-death playoff using the Four-Ball format.
Already committed to the tournament are Justin Thomas, ranked second in the world; Sergio Garcia, the reigning Masters champion; Bubba Watson, who has won twice this season, playing with Matt Kuchar; Ian Poulter, who won this week to qualify for the Masters; U.S. Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk; 2016 Olympic medalists Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson and Patrick Reed, known for his intensity in team competition.
Bubba Watson, two-time masters winner & 2011 Zurich Classic champion, will team with Matt Kuchar in 2018 tournament
Kuchar has not played in New Orleans since 2009; Watson won his 10th PGA TOUR tournament at the Genesis Open in February
NEW ORLEANS, LA (March 6, 2018)— Bubba Watson, who won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2011, then went on to win two Masters titles, will team with Matt Kuchar in the 2018 Zurich Classic that features a team format unique on the PGA TOUR, announced Steve Worthy, CEO of the Fore!Kids Foundation, producer of the tournament.
“Bubba and Matt are both fan favorites, attracting large, enthusiastic galleries wherever they play,” said Worthy. “We expect they will draw some of our tournament’s largest followings in this year’s Zurich Classic as well,” Worthy added.
Currently ranked 20th in the world, Kuchar last played the Zurich Classic in 2009. His best finish here was in 2004, when he tied for tenth.
He ranks 13th all-time in money winnings on the PGA TOUR, with a total of more than $42 million. He has won seven times on the TOUR and twice internationally. His best finish in the current season is a tie for fifth in the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Kuchar excelled at the majors last year, with a tie for fourth in the Masters, a sole second in The Open Championship in a memorable duel with Jordan Spieth and a tie for ninth in the PGA Championship.
Kuchar has played in four Ryder Cups, four Presidents Cups, two World Cups, the 1998 World Amateur Championship and the 1999 Walker Cup.
He also represented the U.S. in the 2016 Olympics when he captured the bronze medal after matching the course record of 63 in the final round to earn his place on the podium.
He won the 1997 U.S. Amateur after Tiger Woods’ three straight championships. His amateur title earned him entry to the Masters and the U.S. Open the next year. He placed 21st in the Masters, the best finish by an amateur in 20 years, and finished tied for 14th in the U.S. Open played at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Bubba Watson has won ten times on the PGA TOUR, most recently at the Genesis Open this season. His win there vaulted him into the top 40 players in the world, and he currently ranks 38th.
He ranks 16th in all-time TOUR winnings with $38 million in prize money. In addition to his win at the Zurich Classic in 2011, he also finished fifth in the 2007 tournament and tied for fifth with J. B. Holmes in last year’s event, his best finish in the 2016-17 season.
He won the Masters in 2012 and 2014, tied for fifth in the 2007 U.S. Open, and took a sole second in the 2010 PGA Championship.
He has played on two President’s Cup teams and three Ryder Cup teams.
In 2015, he donated $100,000 to assist with recovery efforts after the devastating floods in Louisiana. His longtime caddy, Ted Scott, is from the Lafayette area. Watson is a part owner of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, the Double-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, and opened a candy store in Pensacola where his mom Molly sometimes works.
Reed, Pieters form teams for Zurich Classic
U.S. AND EUROPEAN RYDER CUP STARS EACH FORM TEAMS TO COMPETE IN ZURICH CLASSIC
Patrick Reed pairs with Patrick Cantley; Thomas Pieters teams with Daniel Berger
NEW ORLEANS, LA (April 4, 2017)—Two of the stars for their respective 2016 Ryder Cup teams have both entered their own teams in the 2017 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, announced Steve Worthy, CEO of the Fore!Kids Foundation, producer of the tournament.
Patrick Reed, who went 3-1-1 in his matches for the Americans, will team with Patrick Cantley, who missed all of last year due to injury but earned his PGA TOUR card this season with a second place in the Valspar Championship.
Thomas Pieters, who posted a 4-1 record in his first Ryder Cup competition last year, will team with Daniel Berger who played at Florida State and was named PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year in 2015.
“Our team format is attracting a number of Ryder Cup players from last year and many Presidents Cup contenders,” said Worthy. “Both Patrick Reed and Thomas Pieters grabbed the attention of the golf world for their intense play in international competition last year, and we expect more of that here at the Zurich Classic this year,” added Worthy.
Reed, currently ranked 13th in the world, won two Louisiana high school state championships at University High of Baton Rouge, then two NCAA collegiate championships at Augusta State before turning pro.
In last year’s competition, he went head-to-head with Rory McIlroy in one of the most thrilling matches in Ryder Cup history, eventually making birdie on 18 for a 1-up victory. Reed’s overall record in two Ryder Cup events is 6-1-2. He and Jordan Spieth were the only Americans to play all five matches last year at Hazeltine.
At 26, Reed has won five times on the PGA TOUR, joining Spieth (21) and Rory McIlroy (23) as youngest winners with five TOUR titles in last 10 years. His best finish this season was a sixth at the SBS Tournament of Champions.
Cantlay earned his PGA TOUR card with his runner-up finish at Valspar in only his second start after missing all of last season due to a back injury he suffered in 2013. Since the injury, he had played in only six starts on the PGA TOUR.
He had a storied amateur career highlighted by being named the winner of the Fred Haskins Award in 2011 as the nation’s top collegiate player as well as the Jack Nicklaus Award as the Division I Player of the Year—as a freshman. He was also that year named an All-American at UCLA plus PAC-10 Golfer of the Year and Freshman of the Year.
He played on the 2011 Walker Cup team, where he went 2-1-1. Later that year he posted a round of 10-under-par 60 in the Traveler’s Championship, becoming the first amateur in the history of the PGA TOUR to score 60 or better.
Pieters is currently ranked 35th in the world. He has won three times on the European Tour and this year has posted a tie for second in the Genesis Open and a tie for sixth in the World Golf Championships—Mexico Championship. Those finishes earned him temporary membership on the PGA TOUR this season.
In his first Ryder Cup competition, he played to a 4-1 record, the best performance by a European rookie in Ryder Cup history.
He played collegiately at University of Illinois and won the NCAA individual championship in 2012 at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles where the Genesis Open was played this year.
The Belgian native finished fourth in the 2016 Summer Olympics and also made the World Cup team last year.
His teammate Daniel Berger is ranked 34th in the world on the strength of three top-10 finishes on the PGA TOUR this year, including a tie for second at the World Golf Championships—HSBC Champions. He won the FedEx St. Jude Classic last year at the age of 23, holding off the likes of Steve Stricker, Phil Mickelson and fellow Seminole Brooks Koepka, who all tied for second.
He was named PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year in 2015 after a record of 15 top-25 finishes in only 21 tournaments. He tied for sixth that year in the Zurich Classic. He was the only rookie that season to advance to the TOUR Championship, where he finished tied for 12th.
At Florida State, he was named a first-team All-American and was the runner-up for the NCAA individual championship in 2013. He also made the Palmer Cup team that year.
The latest commitments add to what is shaping up as the strongest field in years for the Zurich Classic, with four players ranked in the world’s top 10, eight in the top 20 and 11 in the top 25.
Already announced are the teams of Jason Day with Rickie Fowler and Olympic gold medal winner Justin Rose with Olympic silver medalist Henrik Stenson in this year’s unique team format. Day was ranked number one in the world for 47 weeks and is currently third. Fowler is ranked eighth in the world, Rose is 14th and Stenson is fifth.
Also entered are Justin Thomas, winner of three tournaments this season and currently ranked seventh in the world, along with Bubba Watson, 2011 Zurich Classic champion, currently ranked 19th.
The new 72-hole stroke play format will feature Foursomes (alternate shot) during the first and third rounds and Four-Ball (best ball) during the second and fourth rounds. The starting field will consist of a field of 80 teams. Following the conclusion of the second round, the field will be cut to the low 35 teams and ties at the 35th position. In case of a tie after 72 holes, there will be a sudden-death playoff using the Four-Ball format.
Hatton and Donaldson partner in Zurich Classic
Tyrrell Hatton, 15th in the world, will team with fellow Brit Jamie Donaldson in 2017 zurich classic
Russell Knox, ranked 23rd in the world, and Kevin Streelman also form a team for the tournament
NEW ORLEANS, LA (March 27, 2017)—Tyrrell Hatton, who burst on the PGA TOUR this season to earn temporary membership after only four tournaments and is now ranked 15th in the world, will partner with Jamie Donaldson in the 2017 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, announced Steve Worthy, CEO of the Fore!Kids Foundation, producer of the tournament.
“Tyrrell earned temporary membership on the TOUR after only four U.S. tournaments, an almost unprecedented achievement,” said Worthy.
Hatton vaulted from 121st in the world to 14th last week in less than 12 months of play on the European and PGA tours starting in April 2016.
He posted two ties for fourth to go with a tenth and a tie for 23rd in four tournaments in the 2016-17 season to earn his temporary PGA TOUR membership. He has also earned finishes of second and a tie for third in European Tour events this year.
Last year, he finished tied for tenth in the PGA Championship and tied for fifth in The Open Championship at Royal Troon. He also won his first tournament on the European Tour last year to go with two seconds and five other top 10s in 2016.
Hatton currently ranks first for Strokes Gained: Putting and third for Strokes Gained: Total on the TOUR.
Jamie Donaldson, Hatton’s teammate, has earned three titles on the European Tour and one on the Asian Tour. “Jamie has been a mentor to Tyrrell and they are represented by the same management agency and share a love of the Liverpool Football Club. Their partnership was a natural one,” Worthy said.
Donaldson is also entered on an exemption in the 2017 Zurich Classic because he did not play enough events in the U.S. last year to keep his TOUR card. “Jamie has a relationship with Zurich and we are happy to have him back in New Orleans,” said Worthy.
He finished tied for 48th in last year’s Zurich Classic, which will also be his first tournament on the PGA TOUR in the 2016-17 season.
He was a member of the 2014 Ryder Cup team and hit the winning shot on the 15th hole in singles play Sunday that clinched the victory for the European squad.
Knox, a two-time winner on TOUR in 2016 including World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions and currently ranked 23rd in the world, will partner with Kevin Streelman, who has also won twice on the PGA TOUR.
Knox’s best finishes this season include a third in the OHL Classic at Mayakoba and two top 10s in the WGC-HSBC Champions and CIMB Classic.
His last appearance in the Zurich Classic was in 2015, when he finished tied for 43rd.
Streelman advanced to the FedExCup Playoffs last year for the ninth consecutive time. His best finish this season was a fourth in the OHL Classic at Mayakoba.
Winner of the 2013 Tampa Bay Championship and the 2014 Travelers Championship, he last played the Zurich Classic in 2012, when he finished 71st.
The latest commitments add to what is shaping up as the strongest field in years for the Zurich Classic, with four players ranked in the world’s top 10.
Already announced are the teams of Jason Day with Rickie Fowler and Justin Rose with Henrik Stenson in this year’s unique team format. Day was ranked number one in the world for 47 weeks and is currently third. Fowler is ranked 9th in the world, Rose is 13th and Stenson is fifth.
Also entered are Justin Thomas, winner of three tournaments this season and currently ranked eighth in the world, along with Bubba Watson, 2011 Zurich Classic champion, currently ranked 18th.
Zurich Classic of New Orleans to Debut New Team Event
PGA TOUR Policy Board approves new Foursome/Four-Ball format for 2017
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (November 14, 2016) – The PGA TOUR Policy Board has approved an exciting new two-man team format for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans which will feature two rounds each of Foursome and Four-Ball competition.
The change will be in effect for the 2017 tournament, which is scheduled for April 24-30 at TPC Louisiana in New Orleans. It has drawn widespread interest among TOUR members and already has resulted in a couple of high-profile commitments. Announcing their participation today were the teams of World No. 1 Jason Day with Rickie Fowler, and 2015 Zurich Classic of New Orleans champion Justin Rose with Henrik Stenson, the Olympic gold and silver medalists, respectively.
“I’ve loved being a part of team events throughout my amateur, collegiate and now professional career. I’m so excited that the TOUR and Zurich are making this part of our schedule and can’t wait to tee it up with Jason in April,” said Fowler, the 10th ranked golfer in the world.
“As a longtime ambassador, the Zurich Classic is already a special tournament for me,” said Rose, who beat Stenson by two strokes to become the 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist in Rio de Janeiro. “The addition of a team format adds a new, incredibly exciting element to the event. Henrik and I are very excited to tee it up together in April, and hopefully we can continue our longstanding chemistry and success in team formats.”
The new 72-hole stroke play format will feature Foursomes (alternate shot) during the first and third rounds and Four-Ball (best ball) during the second and fourth rounds. The starting field will consist of 80 teams (160 players). Each of the top available players from the PGA TOUR Priority Rankings who commits to the tournament will choose his partner, who in turn must have PGA TOUR status unless he is chosen as a tournament sponsor exemption.
Following the conclusion of the second round, there will be a cut to the low 35 teams and ties at the 35th position. In case of a tie after 72 holes, there will be a sudden-death playoff using the Four-Ball format.
The Zurich Classic of New Orleans will continue to award FedExCup points and official money, and will count as an official victory for the members of the winning team. As such, both players will receive a two-year winner’s exemption and an eligibility into Invitational fields, including the Tournament of Champions and THE PLAYERS Championship. Additionally, the PGA of America will include both members of the winning team in the Tournament Winners category for the PGA Championship.
FedExCup points and prize money will be awarded to teams making the cut based on combining every two positions from the distribution table for a standard TOUR event, with each team member receiving an equal share. For instance, the winning team will evenly split first and second place FedExCup points (500 for first and 300 for second for 800 total points, or 400 for each player). Official prize money will be distributed in the same manner.
“We are thrilled to bring this new format to the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and to introduce an annual team event to the PGA TOUR,” said Andy Pazder, Chief of Operations for the PGA TOUR. “We have seen the growth of popularity with the biennial team competitions like the Presidents Cup, Ryder Cup and World Cup and the excitement that they produce. We believe the fans will love to see this sort of competition as a regular part of our season.”
“Zurich is excited to bring this new format to the PGA TOUR, and we look forward to the unique competition and comradery at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans this spring,” said Mike Foley, CEO for Zurich North America, which has sponsored the tournament since 2005.
“There is always excitement about team golf, and the feedback we’ve gotten from players has been extremely positive, and I know the fans are going to love it,” said Steve Worthy, CEO of the Fore!Kids Foundation, the host organization for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. “The pairings opportunities are endless and will be very interesting. We are looking forward to the future and continuing our charitable impact on the lives of children in our region.”
The Zurich Classic of New Orleans dates back to 1938, when it was introduced as the Greater New Orleans Open Invitational at City Park Golf Course. It eventually moved to Lakewood Country Club in 1963 and then English Turn Golf & Country Club in 1989. Its first year at the newly opened TPC Louisiana was 2005. Shortly thereafter the course sustained considerable damage from Hurricane Katrina, requiring a temporary return to English Turn in 2006. The Zurich Classic of New Orleans was the first major sporting event that made the commitment to return to New Orleans following Katrina.
